Interview with Yasmeen Ahmed
How did you get to play on a Radiohead record?
It was a chain of recommendations really. Jonny asked for flugelhorn players and Noel Langley and I got recommend to him by a conductor who was a mutual contact.
How much did you know about Radiohead before you got involved in the project?
Not much really. Maybe that was a good thing. I think I would have been a little nervous if I knew more about them at the time.
Did you get to know all band members during the session or were only some of them involved?
I met Jonny, Thom, Ed and Phil - all very friendly people.
Was there anything that surprised you about the band members when you worked with them?
I found out that Ed is a closet trumpet player! Noel Langley (the other flugelhorn player) and I had a little geeky trumpet conversation with him after the session.
What was it like working with the band and their people? Was the atmosphere rather professional or loose and relaxed?
It was very relaxed and very professional at the same time. Jonny also made us a few cups of tea to keep us going. They were all very cool and professional musicians. So no overpowering egos or 'diva' like behaviour!
Did the band explain to you why they specifically wanted the sound of flugelhorns? They've never used them before.
They'd been listening to the soundscape style of pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane at the time, whose music very much inspired them. As flugelhorns have a dark, mellow sound, Jonny thought they would be a perfect addition to 'Codex' and 'Bloom'.
Did you get any rough mixes of the songs beforehand to familiarize yourself with the music or were you only sent score sheets to practice?
It was all very hush hush at the time and so we were only sent some sheet music without any mp3s guides.
Which other songs besides 'Bloom' and 'Codex' did you work on?
We only played on 'Bloom' and 'Codex' so they were obviously happy with our efforts on the day!
When and where did the session take place?
The session was held in a very luxurious but discreet studio in London.
Was there any talk of perhaps working with you again on future projects?
Not at the moment but Jonny has assured me that we are their go-to team for future flugelhorn needs!
