Host: [introduces Thom and Jonny in French] Please welcome to Musique Plus! In the brand new Musique Plus! My first interview – quality interview – from my person.

Thom: [mumbles]

Host: Use this microphone! To make sure...

Thom: Oh, yeah, exactly. [laughs]

Host: So, welcome back to Montreal! It's about the first time in what, a year and a half now? The end of '95, I guess, you were in Montreal?

Thom: We were?

Jonny: [mumbles] A year a half ago, yeah.

Thom: Oh, okay.

Host: Tonight, yeah. And tomorrow is a much larger event.

Jonny: Yeah.

Host: Do you play larger venues everywhere in the world?

Thom: No, heh.

Host: No?

Thom: No, we played in St. Louis to 600 people. Pulled up in a huge arctic truck and three tour buses, and walked into basically a pub.

Host: Okay.

Thom: So it varies.

Host: And then Toronto was a large venue.

Thom: That was huge! That was 6,000.

Host: That's huge, for you?

Thom: Well, I mean, after Glastonbury – we played Glastonbury Festival in Britain and headlined and…

Host: How many people?

Thom: That was... uh...

Jonny: 120... at the festival...

Thom: No, well, 30,000

Host: 30,000?

Thom: And we played a show in Dublin for 38,000, with Massive Attack, so...

Host: Okay! From 600 to 36,000!

Thom: Yeah...

Host: [translates in French] I was in London when you played Glastonbury, and it was like, tonnes of mud, I think, and they said that you... that Prodigy was very, very popular, but you were the kings of Glastonbury.

Jonny: I... I don't think Glastonbury is really about beating other bands, it's just about providing the soundtrack to all the excesses of happiness and drugs that's going on in the festival, so... it's just the soundtrack, really.

Thom: But it was like 'Apocalypse Now!'

Host: Okay! [laughs, translates in French] Do you have expectations when you release an album?

Thom: More just terrified. We were pretty terrified this time round. We didn't think it was that weird, but... we'd worked on it for a year and a half and by the end of it we just didn't know anymore. We'd heard so much of it, agonised over every note for so long that we were just terrified. I was-

Host: Terrified of what?

Thom: Just... what was gonna happen next!

Host: [laughs] Okay, insecurity of the artist.

Thom: Yes, yes.

Host: [translated in French] What are you most happy with about OK Computer?

Jonny: Most happy about?

Host: Yeah.

Jonny: Just... just the songs that worked, really. Like 'Exit Music' and 'Paranoid Android' that we weren't very hopeful... it felt like we were over-reaching possibly. We're just amazed, really, that what wasn't going to work did work.

Thom: I'm amazed that the sound that I had in my head we actually got onto tape!

Host: Okay, I never thought about that. Because you hear it, and you have music in your head and to translate it...

Thom: You never really... you never expect it to actually work! And when it does, or when you have accidents and things you don't ever expect to work, when they do work it just blows you away, really. I mean, most of the album is accidents!

Host: Is what?

Thom: Accidents.

Host: Really?

Thom: Things where you set out to do something and something else happens and you realise that's what you wanted in the first place. It's quite a mind-blowing experience.

Host: Great inventions are accidents!

Thom: Yeah, heh.

Host: [translates in French] 'Karma Police' will be our new bus ticket, you know, top-rated clip for the week as of tomorrow!

Thom: Ooh!

Host: [more French]

Host: [French intro] How many songs exactly are there in 'Paranoid Android'?

Thom: [laughs, points at Jonny]

Jonny: Three and a half, maybe?

Host: Three and a half! You really glued three and a half songs together? It happened on purpose, or an accident?

Jonny: Well, we always claim that we just cut the tape together. But in fact we played the song live about a year before we recorded it, and it was the same. It was longer, even. Used to be much longer. We wrote it like that, and I don't know how.

Host: You wrote it like that?

Thom: We had the thing of... we thought that we could... we had three half-

Host: [taps him on the hand] Microphone! Microphone!

Thom: Oh! Oh, yeah. The thing where we... fleh... bleh... oh it's boring now, don't bother! [laughs] I've lost my mind.

Host: That's it. No more comments about it?

Thom: Uh.. we though it would work. Oh, I dunno. I'm shy now!

Host: Okay... [translates] Very shy guy!

Thom: Yeah, yeah... [giggles]

Host: [translates] And also, 'Karma Police' is also like two songs. No?

Thom: Yes, no it is...

Host: Yeah?

Thom: They sort of go together though. You have one idea and then you get bored, so you move on, and the song hasn't finished, that's all!

Host: [translates] Also, Jonny, I read, I think in 'Select' magazine, that you were "increasingly bored with guitars". Is it true?

Jonny: Increasingly bored with bands who use guitars.

Host: Ah, okay.

Jonny: And just keen to do other things with the guitar I have.

Host: Because there are bizarre sounds that we hear on this album which are made by you, I guess.

Jonny: Right. And we started using glockenspiels and strings and things for the first time.

Thom: And getting into all the boxes in the studio, you know. Our engineer would sit there patiently while we ran around the studio just going, 'What does this do?! What does this do?!'

Host: Because you produced the album so you had time to...

Thom: Yeah, we had time to play with lights and knobs.

Host: [translates] And to shortly recall... you started in France, and you moved back to England to record the album? In what, in a house?

Thom: Yeah, we recorded in a big haunted house in a valley near Bath.

Host: Haunted! Yeah?

Thom: Very haunted.

Host: Okay.

Thom: Very cut off from life. And I think it shows.

Host: Did you start in France, is that true?

Thom: We were gonna go to France, weren't we.

Host: But you never actually recorded in France.

Thom: Well, we couldn't find quite the right space to record it.

Host: Okay.

Thom: Next is Scotland! We're gonna go to Scotland.

Host: Scotland! [translates] Is the whole album... it's turned into a film... is it going to be released as a full-length film?

Thom: It's still up in the air, because it's incredibly expensive.

Host: Okay. Must be, yeah.

Thom: We kind of didn't figure on that when we started. So we're kind of looking for the finance and if we get the finance and if we have the time, then yes, it would be a brilliant idea.

Host: Okay! [translates] Thanks Jonny, thanks Thom!

Thom and Jonny: Thank you!

Thom: That is? Nice! Thank you!
