Dave Fanning: "You've done some amazing videos in your day and there's no videos for Kid A."
Thom: "No, bummer."
Dave: "And yet you've performed the sounds live on stage."
Thom: "Yeah, but like not, not for four months, four tours in a row or whatever, not about any of that either."
Thom: "I think, basically what it is right, is that we, you know, uh, uhm, sorta trying to work out what it is, that that that, we can do, without...it feeling like...you're just back, like the hamster in the little wheel."
Dave: "Right, yeah"
Dave: "Ok then, tell us just how weird it can get with this: 95, Smash Hits Poll Winners Concert or something in London..."
Thom: "Oh, yes"
Dave: "...You're there with Boyzone, Take That, East 17, here they are: radiohead, I mean get me my..."
Thom: "'Iron Lung' as well..."
Dave: "...you played My Iron Lung did ya? ok, get my head around that please Thom... I mean"
Thom: "It was a, it was a joke, we thought it was funny."
Dave: "Oh"
*My Iron Lung plays*
Thom: "Its going out live and we're standing there, at the, uhm, side of the stage and it suddently dawned on me how utterly stupid it was. And, you, you've got like the stage manager ask woman there, and I go up to her and they're announcing and I go 'We're not going on, forget it, not going on.' . She's going 'AHHH' *thom laughs*. And then we went on."
Dave: "You played My Iron Lung..."
Thom: "We played Iron Lung"
Dave: "...and 100 children went home crying"
Thom: "Yeah, well, you should have seen some of the parents, it was wicked..."
Dave: "Really?"
Thom: "...because when it launches into the loud bit..."
Dave: "Yeah"
Thom: "...it was great, I was really proud we did it."
*loud bit of Iron Lung plays*
Dave: "What would you think of this right, in the movie 'Clueless' with Alicia Silverstone, a 95 direction as well, she walks into her brothers room or something, he's playing Radiohead and she's just 'Eww' complained rock..."
*Thom imitates with exagerated 'EWWWW' and laughs*
Dave: "...and walked out the door. Is that alright yeah?"
Thom: "No, I had a problem with that"
Dave: "Oh, did you?"
Thom: "Yeah"
Dave: "Ooo, why'd you have a problem with that?"
Thom: "I don't know."
Dave: "Well hold on, you know what kind of person she was in the movie, she wasn't exactly, gonna be you know..."
Thom: "No, it wasn't anything to do with her..."
Dave: "...she wouldn't have a Miles Davis box-set in her home"
Thom: "...no, no, absolutely, it wasn't to do anything with her, it was just the fact that it was actually put in a movie, uhm, it was just a bit, it was just a bit whack really. I was kind of like, not into it..."
Dave: "Right"
Thom: "...at the time. Because that, you know, Fake Plastic Trees actually means a lot to me and when it gets reduced to the level of, of, joke like that. I think now I probably wouldnt have a problem with it, now its just, I'd be fine..."
Dave: "But Thom, you said a little earlier that you love this music and it means a lot, but once you put it out there in the public arena bye bye, I dont own that anymore."
Thom: "Thats right, thats right, but but you know...uh...yeah, yeah, basically you're right, but it just sorta did my head in, that particular moment it came out. I guess, I was vulnerable to that and had a problem with it."
