This interview was held for Launch Media, which at that point was already part of Yahoo Music. The interview was held at Electric Lady Studios in New York City on june 4th 2003. It's main purpose was an article, which was posted online on july 28th 2003. The conversation was also filmed, and clips from it were probably available at the Launch website along with the article. The video used here was found on YouTube.
TY: Shareholders are greedy, the companies themselves are poisoned and fucked up and if they go down, bye bye, good riddance
['There There' Plays in background]
TY: I think that the reason that people circulate music so much on the net is because they can't get access to it any other way, because the radio's bullshit and that's kind of the only way you can do it.
['Sit Down, Stand Up' plays in background]
TY: I do find it quite amusing that the record industry itself chooses to blame the internet for its demise, whereas everyone knows damn well it's because they're not flogging things that people want to buy (laughs), and because the whole like music scene is just completely sewn up and really tired
JG: It's sort of a sign of people being into what you do, and also I think hopefully it's going to be a force that makes people bring out better records, and records worth owning, you know all these records in the past that had a few good songs and ten rubbish ones, maybe those days are over
['Creep' plays in background]
JG: To start out now as a band would be far more of a struggle, you know.
['Optimistic' plays in background]
JG: I mean it's interesting, when we started, we got funding from our record company to go on tour, and they kept us on tour with their funding for the first two years, and now because record companies aren't making money, that's all stopping and instead they're starting to rely on radio play and videos, which is kind of horrific to us, you know, and with the way radio's going, it's the idea that they're in charge of who breaks bands instead of concerts, instead of.......you know, we'd have never have left Oxford without funding, we'd never have come to America, and it's just.......and it's sad in a way
TY: And then they choose to blame the internet. The bottom line is the shareholders. Shareholders are greedy, the companies themselves are poisoned and fucked up and if they go down, bye bye, good riddance
